The first discussion centered around the Multi Modal public transportation network and pricing for the use of Multi-Modal public transportation and the simplification of the payment and pricing on this network.
Payments of fares are unified in world travel which includes taxis, airfare and hotels, why not apply it to local travel.
This would mean that a consumer would pay for one fare irrespective of using train, bus, taxi, bixi, shared cars, metro or any combination of the aforementioned transportation platforms for a given destination.
We discussed that the pricing should be Dynamic and real time, which means that the price can be modulated due to various factors such as; Time of day, congestion of the transportation network, temperature, pollution, parking availability and other soft variables.
The travel broker can be a good model and the payment brokerage can be applicable to the public transportation sector.
Today there does not seem a willingness of the transport authorities that make up the Multi Modal network to work together.
The payment is not limited by the Technology but by the willingness of the players to work together and share.
There seems to be a consensus that EMV will help the companies’ willingness to federate their services. It will provide the necessary industry standards to help to converge the IT systems.
The pricing model is an important part to define, the tariff optimization (dynamic and real time) can be instrumental in motivating the change of consumer behaviour to use more the public transportation.
Also one of the realities that make the collaboration very difficult for the organizations in this network is that the technology choices made by the various public transportation agencies were made 7 years ago and without consulting each other, therefore many systems are closed and it will be quite costly to make them interact with each other. Unless we can show an economic and usage model that will bring benefits to all parties, the modernization of the IT infrastructure will be a challenge both on a financial level and on a willingness of the organizations to spend to have adequate links amongst each other to provide Dynamic pricing for the network.
As a conclusion the following points can be retained:
Unique pricing for a travel itinerary using the various public transportation means (Bus, train, metro, Bixi, share automobiles, taxis, parking)
Dynamic pricing and single fare for multi modal transportation was important to help the usage of public transportation. Some key considerations for the pricing of the fare should take in consideration security, weather conditions, time, traffic situation, pollution.
Huge challenges in getting all the parties to work together and work out a win-win-win (Political, Consumers, Transportation services) scenario to facilitate and improve the usage of multi modal transportation.
